backlight cutting out irregularly on MacBook

so i recently cleaned the fan out on my macbook and replaced the thermal paste (wooo did it need it) and its been running like a dream until a week or so after i did the repair.

the backlight didnt turn on after sleep. i can see desktop just about and if i flick the f1 f2 keys it will light up for a split second and then go off. sometimes turning on and off works or setting it to sleep and reopening.

i know that it could be either the cable or the component for the backlight but strangely when it works it works perfectly with no issues at all ... until its shut down or sent to sleep.

ive tested it with an external monitor and it works fine.

basically i just need some advice on the best coarse of actions. wheres best to get parts etc.

Sounds like an inverter issue. Could also be the inverter cables. Try moving the screen back and forth and see if there is any change. If so replace the inverter cables. If not, first hook it up to an external display and see if all is OK. If it is, then replace the inverter. I'd also like to see if you have the nVidia video chip. Please give us the last three figures of your serial number so we can get you to the correct guide.

the last 3 digits of the serial are 0P2.

i dont have a nvidia chip, my laptop was the last of the non aluminum models.

work fine with external display

whither the backlight is on or off, nothin happens when i move the screen

it seems more like a sensor thing that isnt always recognising the computer is on, the only odd looking thing that happens that suggest more than a fault is when i try and toggle the f1 and f2 keys the backlight doesnt always fully come on, the bottom left of the screen is darker than the rest then it cuts out.

thanks for the quick reply

Apple MacBook "Core 2 Duo" 2.4 13" (Black-08) Specs

Identifiers: Early 2008 - MB404LL/A - MacBook4,1 - A1181 - 2242

Try replacing this part: MacBook Display Inverter

That either of these part numbers 922-7375, 922-8280

so ud say its the inverter rather than the cables? should i just do both to b sure? thanks very much for your help

by

It sure wouldn't hurt to replace both at same time. The cables will be cheap. By the way, don't buy someone else's failed part off eBay. Use a reputable parts supplier.
