why cant I view or play mp4 movies copied from dvds to an external hard drive on an xbox one s

when I open the containing folder it does not show the movie or series and yet Google shows that the Xbox one supports mkv and yet nothing is visible or able to be played why is that

Can you try the MKV it self? Does that work? How is the external drive formatted? NTFS or FAT32? Does the external drive work for other devices? Like the TV?

@dan0 think it is formatted to new technology file system and not file allocated table and it works fine by vlc on laptop but on xbox one nothing

Okay, I would format it again to NTFS > transer the files again to the external drive and try again! Xbox One should be able to use the NTFS file system.
