The PlayStation 2 (PS2) with the model no. SCPH-900xx is the final stage of development in the PlayStation 2 series. It was released in November 2007.

PS2 Slim reads memory card in slot 1 but not slot 2

I've owned my PS2 for decades but a few ago it was dropped. I believe it affected the second PS2 memory card slot. Neither controller ports nor the 1st memory card slot were affected. Only the second memory card slot doesn't work. I was wondering what I should do before I try disassembling it and if it's possible to replace it? I took a flashlight and checked the pins. They all seem to be in order. At least, I don't see any difference in how the slot 2 pins look compared to slot 1.

Update (03/03/26)

The picture with the toothpick is the player one slot. The picture with my finger is player 2. Without having opened the console yet, I tried using a can of electronics duster to spray in slot 2. I also tried using a lens cleaning wipe. Before this I also tested two different memory cards. Both read on the first slot but not the second. After trying the wipe and electronics duster, the slot still could not read either memory card. I think I may need to open the PS2 to clean the contacts better and/or see if the board contacts might be damaged. Two questions though. What kind of toothbrush would be best to clean the pins and if the solder on the board is damaged, would that affect both slots or just one?

Hi!

This won't be an easy repair as the slots are soldered on the motherboard...

Also a replacement one would be difficult to find (you need a donor motherboard with a different defect).

What you can do,, is to clean the port with isopropyl alcohol and see if that works! Make sure you clean it good (you can also take a toothbrush and clean the pins with IPA).

After this you can test if it works or not. Hopefully it will after cleaning.

Please let us know how it goes!

Before I try it, would I be able to do this without disassembling the console? just through the slot or would it be best to disassemble? Also, what is IPA?

Yes, please try it before you disassemble the console! IPA = Isopropyl alcohol :). Please let me know if you have any further questions!

I posted an edit with pics of the pins on both slots. I think I may have to open my console and check the solders.

Looks clean to me! I’m afraid you do need to open it and check the solders.. sorry!
