Why does my iPhone only turn on when connected to power supply?

To start with my iPhone 3gs took an unfortunate trip through the washing machine, as soon as I lifted it out of the washing machine i took it apart and dried it out as much as possible and that night i connected the iphone to the charger and it turned on and i was able to send a text, i left the phone on the charger overnight and the next morning i found the phone to be somewhat warm so i disconnected the charger, the iphone then instantly turned off and only turned back on whenever the power was reconnected, my initial instinct was that the battery had been fried and ordered a new one but there was no change and then the iphone was booting into the setup screen and telling me to connect to itunes but only when it was connected to the power supply after doing some reading i discovered that the iphone has a fuse which i then bridged but to no avail as the iphone is still doing the same thing. 2 weeks since my iphone worked now.

Just realized something after I re-read your question. Which fuse did you check, the battery and charge fuse?

William Hamilton, besides drying out you phone I would also strongly suggest to clean your phone. Follow this guide to get it done. It was written for a 3G but still applies to your phone. After that, take a look at your dock connector to make sure that it has no broken, corroded or bend pins. Also, when you bridged the fuses, did you check for continuity. Check the voltage on the battery with it plugged in and see what you got. Good Luck, hope this helps.

I have no isopropyl alcohol but im fairly sure that it wont do anything, there is no visible corrosion on the board as the phone was taken apart and completely dried as soon as it was immersed in water, the dock connector is fine and the fuse has been checked for continuity, all pins are also fine, the battery is displaying about 3.5 volts but it is not getting through to the board, there is evidently something wrong with the board, i can not use it when it is connected to the mains and itunes tries to restore it but it can't as during the restore it restarts the iphone and as there is no battery the iphone will not restart, is there any way that i can use jumper wires to put the battery into the board as there is evidently something blocking it's power

It is my experience with multilayer boards that you can not just connect the battery to some other traces. You are telling us how many volts your battery has, but what do you get on the contacts of the logic board, with your cable connected? I attached an image with some of the voltages to the original answer
