Sound comes when on, but blank screen?

I have an iBook G4 14" 800MHZ; my problem is that when I switch it, the sound comes on, but have a blank screen.

Because I have the USB port I can not connect an external screen so that I can tell weather my Laptop monitor has a problem.

I have to buy a external USB connection for monitors but it's so expansive.

Is there other solutions out there to be able to solve this, before i take it apart?

Your kind contribution, attention, and assistance to the above is highly appreciated.

Thank you and have a blessed day.

Your iBook has a mini VGA connector. You could get a mini VGA to VGA adapter any you could connect it to an external display. Try letting it boot and insert a disc. Then push the eject key. If it comes out your display is bad. Otherwise your logic board is bad like so many other iBook G3's (apple had a recall in 2005 but has since ended)

"Try letting it boot and insert a disc. Then push the eject key. If it comes out your display is bad." Could you provide some support for this? Also this is a G4 not a G3 why mention a recall?

As dylan said this machine has a VGA and composite video output. Connect to an external monitor to help diagnose the graphics chip. If it works then we can look at the cables and screen. You can also boot this machine via target mode by hooking to another Mac and run diagnostics on it.

If you don't have an external display or the necessary adapter, try shining a flashlight through the Apple symbol on the back of the screen as you power up. Do you see the Apple symbol or anything else on the screen as the laptop boots, or is it completely blank?
