Use iPad screen as primary monitor

I see you can get replacement screens for the iPad online for cheap. I am wondering if it would be possible to take one of these displays OR an iPad and hook it up to a power source (USB) and a display (VGA, HDMI, or DVI)

Even if soldering would be required.. .this is something that would be just awesome to have.

any ideas?

Thank you for accepting my answer. I myself love the display and it would be great, to use this quality of display for other things. Who knows, may be one day I'll find some instructions how to do it. If so, you'll hear from me. All the best to you and welcome to ifixit :-)

Roberto, the issues with using one of those screens as any kind of display, other than what it is designed for, would be very tricky. If you want to just use the display, you would need to design a driver circuit and the proper firmware/software to drive the display. So this would require first to obtain all the possible data for the display,.i.e. frequencies etc. Than you have to design the circuit board to drive those, or you would have to at least find the driver circuit.

If you wanted to use the iPad as anything else but what it was designed for, you would have to rewrite the firmware/ software driver for this. You will have to disassemble the code for the firmware, rewrite it with the proper codes. You can take a look at the pinout for the dock connector right here and see if you can design an A/V input for it. Not saying that it can't be done, but it will definitely require some heavy duty reverse engineering and circuit bending. Good Luck and let us know how it is going.

yeah... especially at that price of around 30 dollars (must be cheaper wholesale) .. if you do a search for portable display .. they are easily over $100... not as thin, and not a touch screen either...

If you had a whole, working iPad you could use a app such as iSSH to connect to a x11 server i.e.. show your desktop.
