These are symptoms of a bad display panel, this problem gets progressively worse as time goes on, and the only way to fix it is to replace the computer's display panel.

Is this a difficult or expensive endeavor?

Check ebay. There are a lot of iMacs G5 for parts and most have bad logic boards but good screen. You can have one for really cheap.

iFixit has a guide here: iMac G5 17" Model A1058 Display Replacement

If you think you can do it, you can find parts on eBay like lemerise said. You can get just the screen for about $100

Just an update:

I ordered a new display panel on Sunday.

On Wednesday, I had the display, a couple of tools

and my husband followed the instructions, fixed and

running perfect within 20 minutes!!!

Thankyou so much. The instructions were simple

to follow. The new display cost 149$.

This site is awesome!!!!!

This is my son's iMac G5 display. Is this the same as the problem described above? I already replaced the capacitors on the logic board and it didn't fix the problem.

Apple computers , Tablets, phone etc are very stylish and when working they are excellent, they sell as a high end item prices, but are made using very low grade components at rock bottom prices (The capacitors are cheap crap) built in sweat shops in the far east, the workers are paid peanuts for long hours. I repair PCs and had a few MACs and the expense to replace something like a video card in a PC with the same corrupt video display would be about £40/$50 and very easy to fit yourself in a MAC Triple it so £150 for a complete logic board and very hard to fit yourself so plus another £50/$60 to fit by a repair shop.

The moral of the story is if you have a MAC thats out of its warranty and a few years old get rid ! and buy a new one, no doubt APPLES BUSINESS STRATEGY = they are made to fail or pay silly prices for parts .

If you want something older i.e used/second hand buy a PC.

Once a MAC starts to go wrong you will be burning your money on it for ever. A good analogy is a old car with 100,000 miles on it and one thing goes, and another, and another. In Apples case a bulb pops so you have to buy the full headlight assembly. Sorry boys and girls but if someone comes in to my shop with a MAC my heart sinks, shall I give them a silly quote so they take it away or play Russian roulette with my warranty money, as if you repair one thing its OK for a month or two and then it keeps coming back with a NEW problem and the customer wants it repaired for free. Apple should offer a buy back/ discount on old tech so they hold on to their avid Apple buyers. Old apple kit should be thrown in to a skip after 3 years as obsolete or u/s unserviceable by law.
