The Kenmore Elite HE3 is 7.2 cu. ft. capacity electric dryer by Kenmore.

Dryer turns off and comes back on when it's good and ready

We're in a rental where they cut A LOT of corners. This is the w/d setup. The dryer shuts off usually after just a few minutes. The lights go off and you have to wait for them to come back on, lately up to 48 hours. This just won't do. Wet clothes shouldn't sit in dryer for two days, I wouldn't think.

Hi @wonderingwoman

What is the model number of the dryer as shown on a sticker usually found on the inside of the dryer door opening?

Does the washing machine also have the same problem of apparently losing power?

MOD 110.84832201

Thankfully the washer doesn't do this

Thanks.

I think that picture indicates the lint goes out under the house? I was thinking maybe it was backed up, although I vacuum the lint trap down as far as I can with my crevice tool. But the house is very dirty. The air filter is right outside the dryer and gets filthy fast. Wondering if all this ties in, but don't know why dryer would remain off for so long. No lights will come on at all except the interior light, and you just have to wait for them to come back on before you can turn it on, sometimes just for a few more minutes before it goes off again. Thanks.

If the drum light is on but not the control board lights, it seems more a problem with the AC power connection to the control board as power is getting into the machine.

The AC Active wire connects to one side of the drum light and also to the control board.

The AC Neutral wire connects to the door switch (which when the door is open connects to the other side of the light to turn it on) and also wired in parallel from the door switch to the control board

Could be a loose Neutral wire connection on the door switch between the control board and the switch or on the control board or a loose Active wire connection on the control board.

Vibrations from the dryer when it is operating could cause the connection to intermittently fail and then it comes good again.

Regarding a clogged vent, usually this causes the dryer's high limit temperature thermostat to operate turning off the heater in the dryer Usually the dryer will keep running however. When the temperature decreases sufficiently the thermostat it would reset and the dryer would heat again. Worst case is that the thermal fuse would operate and turn off the dryer permanently, as the fuse would need to be replaced as it is non-resettable. The thermal fuse is a safety device designed to stop fires occurring due to overheating if the hi limit thermostat fails to operate for whatever reason.

I suggest that you get the contact the property manager (or the landlord if they're one and the same) to get it fixed. Checking and testing AC power circuits can be dangerous and even lethal if you don't know what you're doing.

Two things I noticed that may or may not be relevant. When the control board is on but the dryer is t running, "PF" flashes. So I have to wait until I see the "PF" before I can start drying my clothes. Today the "PF"was on, I loaded my clothes, closed the door, and then it went off. Today I was lucky and it didn't take hours to come back on again. And today, actually, it ran for longer than usual, so my clothes got dry. Usually it only runs for a very few minutes at a time so I must run it several times. Also, today my clothes got dry very quickly, so I remembered that the dryer often seems unusually hot, so I wonder if it gets too hot and if that has anything to do with all this. And just to mention that the dryer is stacked inappropriately. It looks crooked because the top of the washer isn't uniform

I hear what you're saying about calling the landlord, but we're probably not going to do that. I wouldn't have bothered you with all these questions if we were. So we're probably on our own, which is not a good thing. 2-3 more questions. I suppose you must remove the dryer from the top of the washer and go into the back to fix things (I know we can't do that). Also, the pic I sent of the dryer hose in the closet exiting out the bottom of the house (I guess)-- is that common? So it seems the problem might be leaning more towards the AC power. But I suppose it could be both. Is the heat distributed evenly throughout the dryer? One night after it ran, some parts were fairly cool while some were extremely hot. It seems the lint could also be a problem. Our air filter looked like it had been installed 35 years ago with enough dust collection to prove it. The new one is mighty dirty fast. I guess nothing would surprise me.

@wonderingwoman

Sometimes the vent hose can be routed to suit the location where the dryer is installed. (see p.12 of the owner manual for the different routing options

You will have to remove the dryer to gain access to the control panel where the control board is located to check the connections etc.

You should really call the landlord (or agent) as they may not be aware of the problem. It would be in their interest as well as yours to get it fixed.
