loud fan problem

I have never attempted to do this type of maintenance on a PS3. I have assembled many PC's from scratch in my life time. I have had the loud fan problem for about a year and I never have had the PS3 freeze or do anything strange on me. I assume that this needs to be done to stop all that great noise?
