Mac OS X locks up?

My mac shut down about five times while trying to start it up. It finaly got past the start up but gave me a Mac OS X faliure window. I have been running the processor hard for a couple of hours (recording music). Does any one know if the operating system is about to crap out on me or what?

Options

Could be a bad logic board, but first try reinstalling the OS. Backup all your files and reinstall. Doesn't sound like a hard drive issue.
