iPod Classic 6th Generation. Model A1238 / 80, 120, or 160 GB hard drive / black or silver metal front

Is there a way to distinguish "thick" and "thin" by model #?

Looking for a way to identify the "thick" 160GB Classic by model number or serial number, without measuring.

Trying to buy "thick" Classics on-line, without having to have seller measure iPod.

I think the difference is only about 0.1"

thanks for the help.

They no longer offer this option for iPod classics - this doesn't work. The tech I spoke to thought I was crazy thinking there were 12 different models.

Unfortunately, there is no distinction in model number between the thick and thin 160 GB Classics.

The best way I have found to distinguish them without opening it up is to do the following:

  1. Locate the serial etched on the rear panel of the iPod.
  2. Go to Apple's Online Service Assistant and enter your serial number and country.
  3. Look at the text under the picture on the left. If it reads "iPod Classic," you have the thick version. If it reads "iPod Classic (Late 2009)," you have the thin version.

Good luck!

Brilliant, thank you for this :)

Also just to add to above, if you look on back of Ipod and it says Model: A1238, then it is a thin, 2009 version (aka 7th generation). On older models the last three characters of the serial number will be one of these: Y5N, YMU, YMV, or YMX.

Ben's link above no longer works but see here:

Ignore the comment saying A1238 is the thin model. A1238 applies to the 5th Gen (2005) through the 7th Gen (2009). As it states above, the model number doesn't show if it's thick or thin. Check the serial number on Apple's support page.

take a look at everyiPod.com

The distinct model numbers are listed there for the original (thick) and Late 2008 (thin) models of the Classic 160GB (there are also different model numbers for silver and black variants)

you can also try the model lookup page on the same site.
