1. Quick Checks

  • External keyboard/mouse test: Plug in a USB keyboard or mouse. If they work β†’ it’s a touchpad/keyboard driver issue.
  • Function lock: Some laptops (HP, Dell, Lenovo, Asus) have a touchpad lock button or Fn + F6/F7/F9 (varies by brand). Look for a small touchpad icon on the keys.
  • Num Lock / Caps Lock: See if their lights toggle. If not β†’ keyboard is fully unresponsive.

  1. Hold power button for 10–15 seconds to force shut down.
  2. Disconnect charger & battery (if removable).
  3. Wait 1–2 minutes, then power on again.

  1. Right-click Start β†’ Device Manager.
  2. Expand Keyboards and Mice and other pointing devices.
  3. Right-click each β†’ Update driver or Uninstall device (Windows will reinstall after restart).

  • Restart β†’ Press F8 or hold Shift + Restart β†’ Choose Safe Mode.
  • Test keyboard & touchpad.
    • If they work β†’ software/driver conflict in normal mode.

  • Restart and press F2, Del, or Esc (depends on laptop brand).
  • If keyboard works in BIOS β†’ it’s a Windows driver/software issue.
  • If not working even in BIOS β†’ it’s a hardware fault.

  • If both keyboard & touchpad don’t respond at all (but brightness keys work), the internal keyboard ribbon cable may have come loose inside. This often happens if the laptop was dropped or serviced.
  • A local repair shop can re-seat or replace the keyboard/touchpad.
