Take it to an AutoZone and get a free diagnostic computer read out so you know what to replace.

First step is always to check the computer memory for any stored diagnostic trouble codes.

What conditions make a difference in this problem? Cold/warm? First time starting the engine or hot restarting? Damp or wet weather?

Bill - Thanks for your comments. We ended up replacing the camshaft something (this is my son's car) and now it seems to be much better. FYI - Conditions didn't matter and it was both a hot and cold engine when it happened.

Toni - Probably the Camshaft Position Sensor. It signals the Engine Control Module the position of the camshaft so that the ignition system can fire the spark plugs at the correct time. Glad it worked out!
