When powered on the Sony logo appears then the screen goes blank.

Sony Xperia logo comes on the screen when I power on the device, but then after that the screen is just blank. I don't know if I have to update the software but I have text messages and videos I want from the phone and do not want to factory reset anything as it will delete the data, I think it's just a firmware issue?
