Sounds like a possible failed video card. Try connecting to an external monitor and see if you get anything. I'm not sure if this card is integrated or not but I'll see if I can find something and get back to you.

LED #1

Indicates that the trickle voltage from the power supply has been detected by the main logic board. This LED will remain ON whenever the iMac is connected to a working AC power source. The LED will remain on even when the computer has been shut down or put to sleep. The LED will turn off only if the AC power source is disconnected or the power supply is faulty.

LED #2

Indicates that the main logic board has detected proper power from the power supply when the computer is turned on. This LED will be ON when the computer is turned on and the power supply is working correctly.

LED #3

Indicates that the computer and the video card are communicating. This LED will be ON when the computer is communicating properly with the video card. If LEDs 1 and 2 are ON and you heard the startup sound, but LED 3 is OFF, then the video card might be installed incorrectly or need replacement.

LED #4

Indicates that the computer and the LCD display panel are communicating. This LED will be ON when the computer is turned on and video signal is being generated. If the LED is ON and there is no image on the LCD display panel, the LCD display panel or inverter might be installed incorrectly or need replacement.

Thank you very much I'm going to get an adapter to connect an external monitor and try that. I know there is an inverter board in this mac that the LCD connects to in 4 places don't know if it could be related to the video card or not? Is the spotlight considered LED #3 or is it unrelated to LED list? Also the superdrive will not grab a disc if it is malfunctioning could it cause the system not to boot or could any other components? thanks in so much!

I tried connecting to an external monitor and I have no picture on it either. Could this mean that the inverter board is bad considering that neither one will show a picture?

The spotlight is not a diagnostics LED. Your problem appears to be the video card. If LEDs 1 and 2 are ON and you heard the startup sound, but LED 3 is OFF, then the video card might be installed incorrectly or need replacement. You have to follow the power trail and it stops at the video card on yours. The inverter has nothing to do with it yet and you have no symptoms of its failure.
