Can a li-on battery explode if you short circuit it accidentally?

I plan on repairing this phone's battery by soldering on a new one but I got afraid after reading that lithium ion batteries can explode when they are shorted?

My questions are simple:

will the li-on battery i bought on ebay have a protection on it?

Ipod variant:

will it give a huge harmfull explosion or what happens with a 1400 Mah battery when it is shorted?

will you notice something like this instantly or can it happen later when I have it in my pocket?

I have repaired the screen of another iphone 2g but this weekend I plan on fixing an Ipod and iphone 2g from myself and from a friend. I just read about this.

thank you for the advise!

I just read that there are many cases of exploding batteries... I am now afraid that my other iphone 2g will catch fire... I just replaced the screen yesterday and during the battery removal it got some minor dents and small disformations(nothing really serious..i think/hope)

I have not had one explode from accidentally short circuiting. I have had problems with the protection circuit failing after a short circuit. It is that circuit that is meant to maintain a safe operation. It limits the peak voltage of each cell during charge and prevents the cell voltage from dropping too low on discharge. Humidity, i.e. water damage etc is far more dangerous since it is the lithium that can react violently with any kind of moisture. Just like anything else, use care and common sense whenever you perform a repair. Hope this helps, good luck.In addition, the cell temperature is monitored to prevent temperature extremes.
