It some times irresponsive and a lot of delays up to 2 minutes, i.e when you volume up or down it either goes up non stop or down to the mute.
What might be the cause for this?

Use a digital camera or the camera in a mobile phone to check if the TV's remote control unit is working OK.
Turn on the camera or open the camera app in the phone and then point the end of the remote that is usually pointed towards the TV towards the camera (or phone) so that it can be seen in the camera's (or phone's) screen
When you press any button on the remote, you should see a light flashing at the end of the remote when looking at the remote in the screen.
Make sure that the light only stays on as long as the button is pressed.
Check that all the buttons on the remote work OK.
Usually there's a problem with the Power and the Volume Up/Down buttons as these are the most used buttons on the remote.
If there are faulty buttons then the remote will have to be opened and the button contacts either cleaned or replaced (examples only).
If the remote control unit tests OK it may be a faulty IR receiver in the TV
