iMac G5 17": black screen, no startup sound after hard drive upgrade?

My iMac G5 17" with ALS has two bad sectors on 160 GB Seagate SATA. Booted OK...until I tried to upgrade hard drive

Installed 1 TB Samsung w Leopard 10.5.8 image restored to 1st partition , checked all internal connectors, reassembled. No boot! Only a black screen and no startup sound LED's 1 and 2 light up OK.

Next I installed 80 Gb Seagate SATA (with Leopard image). No joy. I imaged the 160 GB Seagate still black screen and no startup sound and no boot.

The hard drive Thermal Sensor connector and rubber hard drive grommets are a bit rotten...

Help! (Sorry if not UTFSE well enough...no desktop -posting from 320x480 Android).

First, put the old working hard drive back in and see if it will boot to see if you've messed something else first. Next what are you partitioning these drives with? Do you have an original system installation disk for this machine. Where did the 10.5.8 image come from? Do you have a retail 10.5 disk?

Rechecked all connectors ...finally booted up to Leopard 10.5.8 on 1 TB Samsung. Ran well for 6 hours...won't reboot. Black screen and no start-up chime

Examine the 24 cans (capacitors) on the logic board for swelling and/or corrosion and let us know your findings. See if an external monitor will work. LED 3 indicates that the computer and the LCD display are communicating. This LED will be ON when the computer is turned on and video signal is being generated.

have you tried SMC / PRAM Reset?

(Thanks Mayer and Robin). Reset SMC/PRAM numerous times...sorry for not mentioning before. Also reseated removed and/or swapped out RAM numerous times

Prior to HD upgrade my iMac would shut down every time I tilted monitor on stand. Grommets are rotten and insulation to wires are brittle.

(When I try to power up,the bright power switch light stays on, fans spin up after about 3 minutes, HD won't spin, LED s 3 and 4 don't light up at all).

Does this sound like a short?

Leslie, what happened with your iMac? I had the exact same experience: No boot after Hard Drive Swap. Same LED1, LED2 but no LED3. Tried replacing capacitors on original logic board and no improvement. Tried replacement board, no improvement. I am wondering also if there is something wrong besides the board (short, or failed connection), even if the board diagnostics point to logic board failure.
