Repair and disassembly guides for hundreds of optical disc drives.

Repairing optical drives instead of just replacing

Does anyone have advice for repairing optical drives. I have one that sometimes reads a disk but if I try to burn a disk I get errors. I work in an e-cycle plant and we get quite a bit of them and repairing seems like a better option than just replacing.

@jerrywitherite most common failure for something that you describe would be a weak laser. Sometimes increasing the voltage to the laser slightly by adjusting the trimpots (never do that without a meter or you could burn it out). Ultimately replacing the laser would be the only real fix.

@altonbell40070 the iFixit community frowns upon throwing stuff out just because "they are so cheep". Check on here https://www.ifixit.com/Right-to-Repair to see what this is all about.
