Typically this offers both electric insulation and heat isolation. So components near the CPU don’t short out against the heat sink or get to hot.

Can I use a graphene heat sink for pasting?

by

@zhou72335 - I would stick with the normal thermal paste. heat pads or even sheets alter the spacing between the chip and heatsink. Thermal paste won’t do that. The closer the two sit to each other the better. Remember thermal paste is an interface layer to improve the transmission of heat, it is not a heat absorber material nor is it a means to move heat away (heatsink)

Getting back to your original question, you do want to either re-install the insulator or replace the heatsink if it’s damaged.

@danj Thanks。 The M.2 thermal silicone pad might be better, right? In my area, there’s nowhere to buy a heatsink, especially for the OLED version

@zhou72335 - Black heat resistant sheet plastic is what you want to replace the black sheet as you want to protect the components near the heat sink and control heat leakage. Silicone pads used on M.2 SSD’s are designed to move heat not protect the components from heat.

Think of it this way… You have a hot cup of soup in a metal bowl, clearly it’s too hot to hold, so you use something that resist heat like a towel which is also not electrically conducive either! That’s what we want here, but only where the black area is, as just like your soup you still want the heat to escape (cool) so you can enjoy your meal, in this case allow the heat sink access to the heat.
