Keyboard turns on but doesn't type (anything)

Hey guys!

So, I bought this A1314 keyboard off of the flea market. And I'm not sure whether this issue I'm having is hardware or software.

The problem is that the keyboard turns on, enters pairing mode, but I can't type anything on it. And, as far as I understood, you need to type the PIN code for BT pairing from the actual keyboard itself, which I can't since none of the keys work.

I tried the Caps Lock key and it doesn't light up. So...pretty sure it's a general issue. The question is: is this hardware or software? I couldn't find this issue online, so I decided to open a new topic for it, in case other people have the same issue.

Also, is there a way to reset it...? Under BT settings on my Mac, it still shows up with the previous owner's name on it. I tried long pressing the Power button, but....no success. It turns on, LED light starts blinking twice, which I'm guessing means it's in pairing, but...when trying to connect it to my Mac, it shows the PIN I should input, but looks like nothing happens when typing and pressing the Enter key.

The keys don't seem to be sticky or anything, so I don't think there has been water (or at least anything sugary) spelled on it. But yeah, right now, I can't type anything on it.

Any idea?

Update: this seems to be hardware after all.

Problem:

Big Sur UI highlights each keystroke so if one of the keys required for pairing don't work, you can easily see it. Too bad this hasn't been kept on newer versions of MacOS.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

@arsradu what computer and what OS are you using? The indicator light is not showing anything? You have tried new batteries and no change when you toggle the on/off switch? Then it is a power issue. Hardware related.

IF you do get a light the issue may be related to its Bluetooth version no longer being supported. It may just be a compatibility issue. What keyboard have you been using on your current computer? See if you can connect the keyboard to another Bluetooth device. What keyboard have you been using on your current computer?

If you are using a USB keyboard on your current setup, try to follow the instructions from page 5 of the user manual. If your keyboard has not been paired, your "typing" is not going to show since it can't be read yet :-)

You find the user manual under the Document heading on this page Apple Wireless Keyboard

@oldturkey03 hmmm that’s an interesting idea. Let me try a couple of things and see if that makes a difference. Thank you very much for your feedback!

Hello!

Your suggestion made a huge impact to this issue. Thank you!

However, it's not the way you'd think. :))

I still couldn't fix it, because the problem seems to be hardware, not software (missing dome on one of the keys that make up the Enter key), but because I managed to try an older OS on another machine, and since that OS is highlighting each key stroke when you pair a new keyboard (I can see now that newer is not always better), it was super easy to see where the problem was. Number keys worked, but Enter key did not. So it wasn't registering the Enter to complete the pairing.

I ordered another keyboard and that should be working fine. I'm also trying to find a way to simulate a rubber dome input, just to confirm the issue. Any idea how can I do that?

Also, any idea where/if I can find replacement rubber domes for this keyboard? And what can I use to glue them down? Or do the replacements come with glue pre-applied? Has anyone tried this before? I'd like to try to fix this one, too.

Key number 5 also doesn’t work for whatever reason. And that one does have a rubber dome on top. It just doesn’t register for some reason. Does anyone know what could cause this kind of issues?

Go into the Bluetooth control panel, click on the keyboard entry, then click again on the entry it’s self, now rename the keyboard.

Now shut the keyboard off, go back into the BT panel and delete the entry. Last step turn on the keyboard and add it back in. Did that work?

Hey Dan

Unfortunately, that didn't quite work. Or I'm not doing it right. :)) The keyboard is not connected (yet). That's what I'm trying to do. So...maybe it works after you manage to connect it. But right now I'm having problems with that part.

[apparently comments can't have images for some reason...]

When clicking Connect, I get a pop-up with a pairing PIN, and...I can't enter it on the keyboard, since it doesn't seem to do anything when pressing the keys.

@arsradu - OK, let’s give this a try, plug in the keyboard via the systems USB connection (not via BT) this should work (and turning off BT). Again, I would delete the keyboard and then you should be able to enter the PIN and rename the keyboard to your name or what ever.

by

Yeah… unfortunately the keyboard doesn’t have USB connection. It’s BT only. The model is A1314. The image above from

IFixit seems to be wrong.

@arsradu - So how do you charge the built-in battery? You plug it into a charger or into your systems USB port? That’s the ‘Wired Connection’ trust me it works!

by

They're not built-in. The keyboard uses two AA batteries.

For reference, this is the keyboard I'm talking about: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c....

There is no USB port, no wired connection. It's wireless only.

On the left side, there's a cap where the batteries go (they're replaceable, and they do not charge in any way within the keyboard itself). On the right side, there's the Power button. That's it. :)
