How do I fix a USB A to USB C cord, where polarity is backwards?

I have a Vortex that uses a USB C cord to synch and charge. Only the original cord works. No other cords work. Any clue on how to quickly or easily fix this issue. BTAB10 is the model. Thanks.

Personally, I would first check how the existing cord is wired. Those USB-C connectors aren't easy to measure, but if you have some fine tip probes it should be doable. Connect one end to one of the USB-A pins then probe the others and write down which pin or pins on the USB-C it connects to. Once you have all four pins and the shield mapped out, compare it to the standard pinout for a USB-C to USB-A cable as laid out here.

If you figure out what's different, you can either cut open an existing cord and rewire it as needed, or you can buy yourself a breakout board with solder points for each pin so you can wire the port up any way you need to. Something like this would do the job.

Once you've got the cord figured out, be sure to come back and let us know what you discovered. Your investigation may well help the next person who comes along with the same problem.

@dadibrokeit - Does the Vortex phones use a UBS-A power brick if it offers USB-C on the charger stand?

Good find on the breakout unit!

Ah! You’ve falling into the trap. Not all USB-C Cables are the same!

Some are intended for charging with heavier gage wires and multiple contacts, whereas other cables are intended for data use and light power need. And lastly, some cables aren’t true USB-C but instead are custom by the hardware maker or as in the case of Apple they offer a super set of additional lines for Thunderbolt use.

You’ll need to either order the makers cable or locate the schematics to try to figure out what is going on. You’ll likely need create a breakout of some sort to test the lines as the contact pitch is so small it will be hard to hold a meter prob on the contact or you may end up shorting things.
