Is the drive belt bad or is it the transaxle

The mower is an automatic 18.5hp 46" cut, model 917.272040. I put the mower into drive or reverse and it whines. When I put it into neutral it stops. I tried purging the transmission but that did not work. I dropped the mower deck and the drive belt is loose. I also noticed oil on the bottom of the transaxle. What should I do next, replace the drive belt or the transaxle.

Brian, you said the belt is loose, first make sure the drive belt is not slipping. Try adjusting the belt slightly tighter to see if it helps. If it doesn’t help, the transaxle will probably be the problem. Since you have some oil on the transaxle, it may be low on oil or overheating. Hope this helps, good luck.
