It’s likely the batteries onboard logic is not communicating to SMC. Let’s see if we can get a bit more details on what’s going on. Install this gem of an App CoconutBattery it will allow us to see what the batteries onboard logic is doing. Take a snapshot of the Apps main window posting it here.
