Wondering if this issue was ever resolved..
Won't Boot Past Apple Logo, White Screen, HELP!
Having the same issue.
Lion was installed, I can access the HD through target disk mode from my MacBook. Have replaced the RAM. I also wonder if it's a video card problem.
any help would be great.

I'd like you to start up from your original system installation DVD. Go to Disk Utilities and re-formate the hard drive using the "write zeros" option. Then give it one partition. Next install the original system and see if it will start up.

It won't startup using the disk (original system disk - grey disk)
I tried holding C down and using the option menu. Both ways gave me the dark gray rectangle saying you need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the restart button.
After that did not work, I started it back up in safe mode. Got a message that the computer had to be restarted because there was a problem (I took a picture of the 'details'). I then tried restarting using the install cd, and it stayed on the apple logo for ten minutes before I finally shut'er down again.
If you are SURE the gray disk you tried using is the one for this machine, you may have serious problems. I would next disconnect the hard drive and try starting from the original installation DVD. Do you know if the optical drive works?

motor for the fan for the hd???? Would help explain the heat coming from this machine.

What happens if you start the machine with the option key pressed? Do you get an option to choose the recovery partition?

Yes. When I choose the recovery partition, it ends up in a white screen. If I connect through target disk mode to my macbook and startup my macbook using the imacs hard drive, then press option I can access the recovery partition like I'm supposed to. That is how I reinstalled Lion.
It seems your hard drive is ok since you could install Lion on it (in target disk mode). It does seem like you have a graphic card problem. This iMac supports a 2nd display. Have you tried to connect an external display? I guess though that if the graphics card is faulty it would not be able to drive an external display. I am afraid we are talking logic board/graphic card problems and not something easily solved with software tinkering.
In safe mode you disable many drivers i.ex. the graphic drivers. A failed graphic card will in normal mode not start up and you get a white screen. This was a common problem on many G4 Powerbooks. But they have on-board graphics to the only option was to replace the logic board.
One thing I can mention is to change the hard drive that could have some quirks even if you can install OS X on it. But changing the hard drive is almost as much work as changing the GPU so while you have the iMac apart it would be the right time for an exchange maybe of the GPU. But I have looked earlier for a GPU for the A1200 and they are almost impossible to find. So if you want to give this a last shot I would try with a different hard drive.

Please tell us EXACTLY what the problem is. Just a white screen or are you getting to the Apple logo?

I am getting an apple logo. At first, I could get it to restart into safe mode, it would give me the login screen, but when the password was entered and I hit return, it would freeze and not respond to anything.
I then connected to the iMac HS through my MacBook and target disk mode the HS seemed to be fine (I can access all files) I then erased the hd and installed clean snow leopard (retail disk), after restart the only thing that changed was after the apple logo start up screen instead of being white, there was a blue hue to it, safe mode would not do anything after the install - it also displayed a white screen after the normal apple logo.
I then installed two new ram modules. No changes. When I connect to the iMac and press option it does give me the choice of using the recovery hd. I have not gone through that process yet.
At this point I have not opened it up.

I did an install of Lion over Wi-Fi, regular start up still goes through the apple logo start up and then gives me the white screen. However, I can now get it to boot up in safe mode and currently I am online and everything seems to be ok. Cannot get it to boot up out of safe mode though... what the heck?!?
