Hard drive is making a clicking noise

Lately my iMac's HD has been making a "clicking" noise intermittently - is it on the verge of failing? When the issue begins my iMac freezes until the noise stops. I've ran several SMART tests with a 100% pass rate.

Should I replace it before it fails? Or is there anything else I can do to diagnose and/or fix the issue?

Sounds like a bad hard drive to me. Your machine is under warranty so take it in ASAP after you have backed up your data.

Hi David,

  • Your hard drive is producing clicking sound, this might be due to any physical damage received.
  • Take the data back up immediately, either image it or clone the drive.
  • But, if your drive is inaccessible then run a Mac data recovery software to get back your files. You can download a data recovery Mac software to do this - http://www.stellarinfo.com/mac-data-reco...
  • Avoid any further experiment or diagnosis of your drive until and unless you are expertise enough to do so.
