No Display: constantly goes to sleep except with external monitor

My MacBook (2,1, C2D 2.0) will not show the display on boot and immediately goes to sleep once the operating system is loaded. If I press the power button to wake it, I see the desktop perfectly for about one to three seconds and then back to sleep. If I have an external monitor attached the the mini-DVI port none of these problems occur- it works perfectly. I have another broken MacBook and I've tried connecting it's display and inverter with no change. I also tried swapping out the sleep sensor with no difference. Anyone have any more ideas before I accept that i now have a pancaked Mac Mini?

Oh yeah, Reseting PRAM and SMC does nothing. I also ran the Apple Hardware Test from the install disk and it detected no errors.

I had exactly the same problem with liquid spilled MacBook. Working perfectly on an external monitor but always sleeping when the external was deconnected. Also the battery charging system was not working. Tried to replace the battery/sleep board, magsafe connector without success. Finally it was a logic board issue. Sent the logic board for repair in an Ontario (Canada) shop where the board was repaired for $200.

Thanks, I think I'm now ready to accept that this is a logic board problem.
