Desktop dissapear, and can't get anything but system preferences

Everything dissapeared while backing up i photo pics, I restart and just able to see the system preferences. It says that the HD is full and need to erease files. What can I do?

Options

Hook up an external hard drive to copy files onto. Start up holding down the shift key. Copy your extraneous files to the new drive, Trash the ones on your hard drive and empty the trash.
