Kara, yes you can, but only on the 8GB. The 8GB 2nd and 3rd Gen iPod touch are virtually identical. Hope this helps, good luck.

No you cant, there are a lot of posts out there complaining that the 2g part doesnt fit the 3g, because the connectors are different:(

Yes you can, you just have to watch your model number. When Apple released the 3rd Gen iPod Touch, they didn't update the 2nd Gen 8GB with a newer processor, or with Voice Commands, it was maintained as a 2nd Generation iPod Touch while being advertised as a 3rd Gen Device even though no changes were made. However, the 32GB was updated, and a 64GB iPod Touch was introduced. Basically any iPod Touch that is 8GB in size (3rd gen or 2nd) is in the 2nd Gen form factor and is compatible only with 2nd Gen electronic parts. If you purchase a 3rd Gen part (other than that for an 8GB) for your 8GB iPod Touch, it will NOT work. The connectors are that of the 2nd Gen and a 3rd Gen part (over 8GB) will NOT fit. Read the question, Kara was referring to an 8GB iPod Touch, which is really an iPod touch 2nd Gen....
