Advice on upgrades to the hard-drive and RAm

My Mother Recently gave me this Laptop, Ill be leaving for college soon, and I really want to boost the performance on the thing without dropping too deep in my pocket book. What are the best hard-drive and the appropriate and safe amount of memory that I could install on my mac without a system burnout or something. I was thinking 500GB and then upgrading the ram do you guys have any suggestions. I'm clueless on this one.

What exactly do you mean "system burnout"? If you install ram and hard drive correctly you will not have any type of "burnout" . You can put in however much hard drive space and ram that you would like to pay for. I'd recommend a 500GB drive and 8GB of ram.

I don't mean " System burn out " literally but i'd imagine installing too much memory or ram that the computer cant handle it. All a myth I assume now. Are there any products you'd recommend, such as brands and so forth.

Hard drive and ram brands are all personal preference. I personally like Corsair, Western Digital, and Kingston. If you end up installing too much memory, your system will be okay, however, it will only recognize the max amount of ram your computer is designed to use. It will not burn out though. Any hard drive that physically fits (2.5" drive) will work. What model and year laptop are you using?
