Ok I can't imagine what else would make the select button not function other than the motherboard, but I have replaced the board and still the clickwheel and select button don't work.
Is this a good question?

If you're getting a red x now, try disconnecting and reconnecting your hard drive-- the red x usually indicates a bad hard drive, but if it was just working, you might've connected back together wrong. Check both the connection of the hard drive to the connector and the connector to the motherboard.

Ya I managed to get it all working. Was the HD zif... dunno why it chose to out then but maybe just the stress off putting it back in. Thanks for the help

Well replacing the clickwheel fixed that but now its just decided to start booting to the red x
