I see the apple, but where is the spinning wheel?

My 17" Macbook pro (1151) makes the startup sound, boots to the gray screen with an apple, but will NOT bring up the spinning beach ball. I only get to the Apple logo with no cursor and no spinning wheel. Anyone have a clue what this means and how to fix it?

This could be several things. Your hard drive may have failed or you could have a corrupted system folder or an extention holding you up. To test try starting in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key on start-up. If it starts then the problem is an extension. This failing, start up from your system installation disk by inserting the disk and holding down the "C" key. Go to the second screen pull down menu to Utilities > Disk Utility. Select your hard drive in the left hand column, then see if it can be repaired. Let us know your results and we can go from there.

Thank you for responding to my post. I appreciate it, because no one responded in the Macbook forum at Apple last year. Holding the shift key still only boots to the apple with no spinning gear. The hard drive is new, because I thought that was the problem too.

I swapped the working drive from a friend's 15 inch MacBook Pro and put it into my 17 inch, but still had the same problem. My drive worked fine in the 15 inch. I swapped RAM between units too. All worked in the 15, but still got no spinning gear on the 17 inch. I just replaced the top case (keyboard and palm rest), but still no spinning gears. I only get an Apple on the grey screen.

There is nothing on the Internet about this problem. So, I'm not sure where else to start. At this rate, I probably could/should have bought a used one from eBay and thrown this one in the trash.

Hi mayer, mine was same like yours but i fixed it by removing the WLAN/wifi card.

I did everything as you did like removing the ram one by one, removing the hdd and tried to boot it in a different mac, checking the hdd blah blah blah!!! except the WLAN card. After removing the wifi card my machine booted successfully
