No LCD backlight on my MacBook Core 2 Duo

My MacBook's backlight doesnt work, i can see the screen when i hold it at an angle towards the light and it works perfectly when connected to an external monitor. The wierd thing is, that the backlight comes on for roughly two seconds when i power on the MacBook, but only the right half of the screen is lite up and there are about 6 different coloured vertical lines over the screen.

i did a tear down on the machine, i flexed and moved the inverter/data cable around, no change in the backlighting situation so i dont think it's any of the cabling. I also removed the inverter board at one point and the lcd screen was still on.. just no backlight of course. So i dont think it's a problem with the LCD or cabling.. but im not too sure. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Someone please help me solve this! email me at tobykake@live.com

Replace the inverter cable and the inverter board. If it doesnt work then the backlight or the LCD panel is the problem.

Hi, i replaced the inverter and cables. It was the inverter that was the problem. Just another problem now, the wifi has very very weak signal. if cannot connect unless im literally right next to the wireless router.

Sounds like the airport antenna (wires that run the bottom and side perimeters of the lcd) may have been left disconnected or been cut. My only thoughts are to remove the keyboard (following proper procedure) and confirm that your airport card has its cables connected - usually a white and black clipon pair of wires that lead up to the display. Also there's a possibility that these wires got pinched or severed when replacing the white hinge clutch cover.

I just fixed my A1181 MacBook that had a back-light issue. My issue was sometimes the back-light would stay on for maybe 10-15 minutes, other times it would only be for a split second, usually the latter. I bought an inverter board from iFixit but that didn't work. I also bought a new back-light bulb from an online shop (hard blue shift in color) in case my bulb was bad. Upon dis-assembly, I noticed one side of the back-light bulb had a very bad solder joint. Out of curiosity I re-soldered the connections and my back-light has been working for days with no issue.

Maybe this will help someone.

Full disclosure...this isn't the most easy job in the world.

Before tearing into your machine like I did, check the brightness control for your screen in system preferences, display, and adjust the brightness slider. This is a common problem and this one minute fix took care of my problem on two computers. Felt stupid, but hey it worked. Sometimes you have to think laterally, instead of linearly.

Chris - I am having the same wifi problems and when I tool my hinge cover back off I noticed that the black wire on the left was severed...Is there a way to get replacement wires for this or do I need to take it in to get it looked at? Thanks!
