Why won't my iPhone turn on after I dropped it in water?

I had a car crash about a year ago and my iPhone 3gs fell into a puddle. I didn't really bother to dry it out properly and i just let it sit by the window so the sun would hit it. I tried to turn it on and i can see the apple logo light up (but the screen won't really "light up" it is dark but you can barely tell that it does come on) and then it goes to the screen where it says to connect to iTunes. I try connecting it to iTunes but it gives some type of error and nothing happens. Do i need a new hard drive, logic board, battery, or new display? any recommendations?

What error does it give you? Be specific since it can mean a lot. Also, the iPhone does not have a hard drive.

i connect it to iTunes and it tries to update software and restore but after the software is downloaded, an error box pops up and says "the iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored, An unknown error occurred (2001.)"

freddyibms, "Error 2000-2009 (2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2009, and so on): If you experience this issue on a Mac, disconnect third-party devices, hubs, spare cables, displays, reset the SMC, and then try to restore. If you are using a Windows computer, remove all USB devices and spare cables other than your keyboard, mouse, and the device, restart the computer, and try to restore. If that does not resolve the issue, try the USB issue-resolution steps and articles listed for Error 1604 above. If the issue persists, it may be related to conflicting security software." freddyibms, my suggestion would be to kind of start from scratch. Since It is possible that you phone is suffering from water/corrosion damage, use these guides to disassemble you phone, and this guide to clean your water damage. After that, replace the battery and re-evaluate your phone for any damage. Since you can see your screen, just not lighting up, it sounds like you are having backlight issues. If, after trying to fix the water/corrosion damage, you still do not have a backlight, start by replacing the LCD, if that still won't work, check on your 6R8 coil. Watch this video and see if that is something you would tackle. Okay, and if after that ;-) you still do not have a backlight, it is possible that you have an IC problem ( It is the 109L). Anyhow, I hope this helps to get you started, good luck
