Mac won't start up, stays on screen with apple logo?

Hello, I got given my friend's old laptop but it doesn't get past the screen with the apple logo. I have tried doing the PRAM and starting the laptop up without the battery but still nothing. Have you got any ideas how I could get past this problem?

Also 2 other questions...

-I am hoping to upgrade the RAM on this laptop, What is the most amount of RAM it can hold and what type of RAM is needed?

-the OS X on the laptop is the original, my friend has a new version of OS X Snow Leopard(from 2011)- would it be a good idea to try and run snow leopard on it, would the laptop be able to cope with it?

That gray disk is machine specific. Unless you have the same model number it most likely won't install.

The original os x i have on my laptop now...surely needs upgrading? any way of upgrading without having to pay?

main problem is actually starting it up and getting past the apple screen, any solutions mayer? also how much ram would you reccomend me to buy?

As to the RAM, 4 GB is really plenty and you pick up interleaving speed by installing two identical chips. You really need to pop for a $29 Snow Leopard 10.6 retail disk, which is a very good and stable and well testing operating system. This can be bought directly from Apple now and is needed if you want to ever go on the 10.7. To get it up right now, either use your original installation DVD or try starting in Safe mode by booting holding down the "Shift" key. Let us know if that works or any changes in your results.

Yes, the troubleshooting would be resetting the SMC (remove battery and power cord, press power button for 5-10 seconds, replace battery and power cord), the PRAM and then trying to boot with the Snow Leopard DVD.

Actually, with that machine you can run up to Lion, the latest OS, and according to Everymac you could fit up to 6Gb of Ram, even if 2 or 4 would be enough for a common use.

If a through and clean install doesn't do the trick, you could return here with more details.

Cellers, it's a Core 2 Duo. The only problem I see with upgrading is the use of the friends copy being a gray machine specific disk rather than a retail version.

Well, that's what Everymac says:

*This system can run the latest version of OS X 10.7 "Lion" if upgraded to at least 2 GB of RAM. It is not supported booting into 64-bit mode, although this is believed to be due to an Apple imposed EFI block rather than a technical limitation. It does not support "OpenCL" either. Please also note that OS X Lion is not capable of running Mac OS X apps originally written for the PowerPC processor as it does not support the "Rosetta" environment.

Also, Mactracker confirms Lion as a viable software.

Are you sure you're not mistaking the Macbook 4,1 with the poor, little 1,1 (who still I cherish and love)?

However, it won't run in 64 bit mode, thus it won't add much more than the Snow Leopard our user here as can already give.

Thanks for your help, I have tried resetting the SMC and still nothing, I cannot load up the snow leopard DVD as the screen just stays on the apple logo and does not change. I can not click or see anything else.

I have been told that this laptop can only hold a maximum of 2gb of RAM, are you sure it is capable of holding 4/6gb RAM? That would be fantastic if so.

2 Gb is the maximum for the Core Duo model, yours seems can hold more. Look it up at everymac, it's a bible for mac models.

How much ram your laptop has now? Have you tried booting up with different rams, or removing the Hard Disk first? You can use the guides that popped up under the picture of your model.

Sometimes mismatched Ram or a messed up HDD can prevent the computer to boot at all.

But first: is your Snow Leopard DVD a grey one? Try booting up the original DVD of your machine, with "D" (or the key pressed on it to start the Apple Hardware Test) pressed.

the laptop now has the original amount of RAM purchased as standard, I can't check though as I can't turn it on.

I haven't tried booting up different RAMs I need to buy some still do you know what type of ram is suitable for my laptop? I really want enough RAM in the computer to run photoshop at a steady pace.

I haven't tried removing the hard drive but when i do- do i just take it out then put it back in?

My friend who sold me the laptop had lost the original DVD of the machine, and the snow leopard DVD is a grey one yes.

Put in the Snow Leopard disk and then shutdown the Macbook. Now hit the power button to turn it back on. Now press and hold the option key. You need to press and hold the option key as soon as it powers up. Hold the key down until you get the options to either boot to the hard drive or the Snow Leopard DVD. There will be a picture for each on the screen and you will have to click one to choose it. (May have to click the picture twice. Once to choose it and the second to get it going)

Once you boot to the DVD then you can wipe the disk using disk utility and install Snow Leopard. The utilities menu will be on the top toolbar as you go through the process with the Snow Leopard DVD.

Also I would put 4GB of RAM in it. You will not need any more than that unless you are going to be running some taxing applications. Such as Photoshop.

Hi justin, i tried what you said..however when i turn the laptop on whilst pressing the option key, it ejects the cd after 30 seconds and stays on the white screen with just the apple logo showing

I am sorry Mayer I thought he had a new Snow Leopard Retail DVD to use. Go buy a Snow Leopard DVD to use. Or down load Lion and put that on a DVD to boot to.

I've had to have 10.6.8 to be able to upgrade to Lion. Couldn't do it from even a 10.6.5 install.
