Doesn't charge or sync, but does connect and play on my stereo

The ipod won't sync or charge, but it will play on my stereo. There are no problems with the usb connection, as I can connect my nano.

Mike, when you say it plays on your stereo, is it hooked up through a dock connector?

What I would do is to replace the battery. Without any damage to the iPod, and a dock connector that is free of dirt, debris, corrosion etc. it is possible that your iPod does not charge through the computer and will not be recognized due to a dead battery. The dock provides a higher amperage than the computer. Of course, do make sure that your dock connector on the iPod is a-ok. Hope this helps to get you started.

Thanks, I will give that a try. But will replacing the battery affect the sync connection as well?

It does not normally, but the iDevices do flaky things when they have a bad battery. Of course, like I mentioned in my answer, do not forget about the dock connector in the iPod. If you have any issues there, it will have the symptoms you described. It's just if you need to replace anything, start with the battery. A Lot easier than the dock connector/logic board.
