Why is my new touchpad cable getting hot?

I inadvertently broke my touchpad cable when replacing the battery on my older Mac so I got a new one. I may have broken a small piece in the trackpad connector when removing the old one but I’m not sure so I got one of those as well. When I hooked the new trackpad cable up to the original trackpad and then down to the battery it got extremely hot like it was going to burn up, so I immediately disconnected it. Does this mean I need to replace the trackpad as well? Do I need to completely turn off the battery power on the inside when replacing this stuff?

You obviously have a power line short at the trackpad. Logic shorts won't draw enough current to cause heat like that.
