No. That's odd. Every iPod should work with every pair of headphones. I never used a single time the original iPod headphones since I got my first unit, I only used AKG brand headphones.

If you tried carefully placing the jack deep in the slot, and it still doesn't work with every headphones you have, the unit may be defective.

However, try with the supplied earphones before proclaming your iPod DoA or broken: as far as I can stretch my memory, every old pair of headphones I used to have since I was a kid died because the wear and tear ripped badly one of the two cables, thus I ended up being unable to hear from one side of the earphones.

So, the test with a brand new pair of headphones is mandatory.

I just played with my own ipod 4g (original headphones and other) if the ear phones are not pushed all the way in and i mean to the last click they only play out of one side, I don't mean to be insulting but if you have had two ipods with the same problem i don't think the problem is with the ipod... ;-/

Yes, I would start by trying a new set of headphones if you still get the same issue then you might have worn out the jack. You can buy that part at ifixit.com (here) or try a number of other places. I googled the this and found iRefresh, rapidrepair.com and a slew of others.

If it isn't your headphones it is probably the jack, when it goes only through one ear it is the jack that is need of replacement, if you can't hear anything at all it is the logic board.
