Has the magnet sensor setup changed?

I purchased a third party case with the magnetic sensor trip, but it doesn't work. I also found at least one third party case item description indicating that the auto sleep/wake function won't work with the new iPad, only the iPad 2. What changed that would cause third party cases to stop working but still allow the Apple Smart Cover to continue functioning normally?
