Blown Component on motherboard

Hi,

I have a PS3 which turns on but get no display on the screen, its not yellow light/red light or anything. Its as if the video cable or hdmi isnt connected. I have stripped down the console to look for damage and there is a broken component on the motherboard, except I dont know what its called and therefor cant look to buy a new 1, I also dont have a donor board to use. I have included an image for you to see and on the top of the part it says '3R9'. Please can anyone tell me what it is?

Thanks

3B9 coil olturkey03

Do you have any markings for that coil on the logic board, should be a L something That way I can identify the values of the coil.

Go to Mouser and Newark Electronics, run the numbers on the coil through their search. If that does not pan out, look at the traces coming off of it. Do they share common points and/or lead to the same place as the capacitor mounted next to it? If they do, it is most likely part of a tank circuit - possibly for a ground. Get the value off the cap, then do the math on what the value of the coil/inductor should be in a tank circuit. That will give you the value of the coil, if such is the case.

Thanks for all the help everyone, I may be able to get a donor board for it after all, i'll see how it goes and post results, i saw this http://uk.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Panas... on the shops ABCellars recommended (thanks for that) which is the closest thing to it but still not quite the same. I now beleive the correct name for the component is an inductor, correct me if im wrong.

thanks again and ill let you know how the transplant goes in the next few days

Aaron Marsh, yes you are right. It is an inductor. Since it is an inductor, the value of this is 3.8uH. I just checked on the diagram as well. They are easily available at place that ABCellars named as well as here. and they are not very expensive. BTW they are SMD components and do require some practice in replacing them. I'd go for the higher amperage one. If you want to verify this, just zoom your picture out so I can see more of the surrounding components. Hope this helps.Good luck

I looked at this chip for you, it's going to be tough to remove from the board without damaging anything, and you will need specialized equipment

My suggestion is take it to a shop who does this with the part on hand, they will usually charge the minimum hour rate

Before you can do anything, it's best you try and find this part online for the shop, otherwise if you can't, ask if they have any on hand(which they probably do)

thanks for the replys, I have just about every soldering equiptment around so equiptment isnt a prob and I do component replacement nearly everyday I just havnt come across this particular part before. I contacted a few component suppliers but none seemed to know the part. It is a copper coil inside. Does anyone know where to get the part? I actually have another ps3 mobo with 2 blown proadlizers which I could donate the part from but I plan on fixing the other board aswell so it's not ideal.

Thanks

Also on another note, how do you embed an image directly in these posts :)

Aaron Marsh, look for the orange tab on the left bottom of the pages "Images" Click on it and a small window will open. Left side you'll see an arrow and a globe "Upload" Click on it and follow the directions from there. Once you select your image it will appear in the bottom window Left click on it and hold the left button down, drag it into your answer or question field. It should now appear with your question/answer. Now if you post an image make sure that you look at the markings on the logic board as well.

As a true backup option, I would see if you could use a 6R8 coil from a iPhone 3GS, but this is a ABSOLUTE last resort

by

Jose Manuel, for what device? PS3? where is the coil locateD?
