Why is my phone flicking on,off when put to charger

my phone is flicking on and off when i put it on charger..I cannot switch it on.what could it be

It could be a bad charger cable, dock connector, or problem with the battery/solder joint.

If the charging cable (or battery is bad) and the battery is fully depleted you'll get a black screen. Since it's not charging, it will stay black when disconnected from an AC/USB power source.
