Startup pauses with "No parking" sign after 2 min.

Trying to start up from internal or external HD is not successful. Apple sign and clock appear, but after 2 min. give way to the road sign "No parking". When I have erased and restored, the machine has started up just once after that, both times. The internal drive is 3 years and the external two months. I have changed the PRAM battery, but after 12 hrs machine still does not start. The machine runs from a system CD which I have used for restoring or in FireWire mode. What can I do? (Thanks for a good guide to make a quick replacement of the PRAM battery you sent.) Model is A1151.

One of the two RAM slots is acting up or one of your RAM chips is DOA.

Do this in this order- Take both RAM chips out and power on. Do you hear some beeps and the sleep light turns on? Good, now power down. Next insert RAM chip 1 in slot 1 and power on. Nothing? Take out RAM chip 1 and insert in slot 2. Nothing? Take out RAM chip 1 and set it aside. Now insert RAM chip 2 in slot 1 and power on. Nothing? Take RAM chip 2 out and insert in slot 2 and power on. Nothing? Go get you some working RAM chips and do the above all over again to troubleshoot if you got bad RAM or if the slots are bad.

Also, do the above with the charger plugged in and also with the charger disconnected and just the battery running to troubleshoot if it's the sound/power board.

Take out the hard drive and replace with a working hard drive to rule out a faulty hard drive with bad install of the OS or corrupted startup files.

If you get this beast up and running make sure you go into disk utilities and click on repair permissions.

Also, don't forget to do the SMC reset and PRAM reset. You can Google on how to do those procedures.
