"Electric" noise from inside, doesn't last more than 5 minutes on batt

I just picked up an early 06 MBP for a fine price of nearly free.

Immediately I find that the battery doesn't last more than 5-10 minutes although the battery when the test button is hit shows complete bars. Then when plugged in and powered on the magsafe doesn't attempt to charge the battery. Before I ditched OSX for arch I snagged a system profile which shows this:

I know that's about 59000-60000 mAh higher than reality would have it my question is this though:

GIven the noise, given the charge "info", given the fact that the battery doesn't actually charge after a no power death.

Is the battery actually bad?

What else could cause this failure to stay alive while on battery?

Hopefully in a month a friend of mine with the same laptop with zero issues will be back in town for me to test this battery in his machine.

The arching/electric noise bothers me the most, unless the sound is coming from the lower bezel. Every time it makes that noise something is most likely being damaged. With all the symptoms you are giving and the price you paid I would suspect the cause of the problem is liquid damage. I would disassemble the laptop below the keyboard (not the screen area), inspect the boards for burn marks, melting and signs of liquid damage. Clean the boards, even if you don't see obvious signs of liquid damage. Click here for guides to help you disassemble the laptop. Click here for a guide on the clean up. After you have finished cleaning everything, put it back together and give it a try. Please let us know the results. Don't forget to apply thermal compound/paste to the CPU and video chips when putting it back together.

I actually had opened it up the same day after discovering the sound, at the same time I installed an older, first gen, crucial 32gb SSD. I didn't find anything of the scorched look nor did I see anything that showed evidence of liquid. I will have to get some rubbing alcohol to clean everything with another day. In the mean time I will try to record the noise as it's not an "arch" so much as it is a "buzz" similar as to what a a bad ground would make in an oven or other appliance. I heard the same noise from my 06 black mb that eventually failed to charge batteries all together. That was chalked out to a Monster energy drink being spilt into it by my younger sister when I left the mac for my mother to use while I was off at training.
