I have a gray bar across my screen approximately 1.5 inches thick.

I have approximately a 1.5 inch gray bar going across my screen. I know it is a hardware issue after working with Apple. They had me perform a complete wipe and load.

Does anyone know what piece of hardware could be bad? I want to repair this myself. I can't justify spending the $300 Apple wants to fix it.

Thank you.

You can repair it yourself but there are things you have to watch for. It is extremely easy to tear the wifi antenna which is located to the right of the home button. Other than that, use a heat gun to soften the adhesive and be careful and patient and with the guides on here and YouTube you can do it. Watch at least a couple different ones first so you get a good idea of what needs to be done. And no, I would not call it a "very easy fix" it can lead to more problems and issues if you aren't very careful. But if you are somewhat mechanically inclined you should be able to do it.

Ya sounds like a bad LCD. This is a very easy fix. 8 total screws and about a half hour the first time.
