Why is my 2009 MacBook Unibody Screen unaligned with the base?

The screen on my White Unibody MacBook is unaligned by about a millimeter. I've never dropped it or anything, but it is out of warranty, so I can't bring it in to get fixed. I would try adjusting the hinges. Close the book and see if you can tell which side needs to be moved or has been moved then use this guide to loosen the correct hinge, adjust the the top and re-tighen the display: MacBook Unibody Model A1342 Left Clutch Hinge Replacement
