How to solve overheating, fans and not waking from sleep?

Hello :)

So since I installed Lion, I have the following problems with my MacBook:

1) overheating: often over 100ºC

2) fans over 6000 rpm even with temperatures <70ºC

3) often mac does not wake from sleep or does not go to sleep

I did a HardwareTest and got the following error:

"4SNS/1/40000000:TCOD-108.250"

I have resetted SMC, PRAM and NVRAM. The NVRAM reset seemed to help but after about 30min/1h the overfanning reappeared.

This is definitely a problem connected to Lion, but I can't go to the shop because my guarantee is over. I thought maybe updating Lion to its newest update (the 1GB update in the beginning of Feb 2012) would solve the problem, but it didn't.

I don't know what to do anymore. I read somewhere that maybe I should reset the PMU? I'm chickening out because it seems dangerous (that something in the Mac could be destroyed).

Could someone please tell me how to solve this problem?

Thank you SO MUCH.

PS. regarding the sleep, I think my computer is seriously confused, because when it goes to sleep, the light (white one in front of the Mac) gets turned on, and when I open the Mac, the light gets turned off. It's like it goes to sleep with the lid open and wakes up with it closed.... :/

PS2: I have a Macbook late 2008, 4GB memory, 2.4Hz

Hello Dan!

1) I cannot use another drive on my Mac, I have one partition only

2) Network Activity

Downloaded and ran MacScan and got no spyware.

3) I checked my activity monitor like you said.

[in the past I noticed that the programs that use a lot of CPU are Safari and Preview. So I'm trying not to use Preview that much and for Safari I have blocked Flash (I saw that as a recommendation on the internet).]

I closed all programs that were not essential. Tried to see if I had the updates on my most used programs. I also tried to identify some programs that were showing up on activity monitor and I think I may have solutioned the problem with the sleep. Apparently I had some files on queue on my printer. I deleted those and so far (since 1h) my Mac is going to sleep just fine.

Regarding the other programs on Activity Monitor, I don't know much of this stuff, so if you don't mind I'm posting them here and maybe you or someone else can see if there's something wrong there:

What are the last 3 characters of your serial number, please?

ABCellars, the last 3 characters of my serial number are 8QT. Why is that relevant?

You'll need to look at what is using up your systems resources (running wild).

Sounds like something is not compatible with Lion, if you didn't have this problem before.

Do you have another HD you can do a fresh install (clean drive)? If so, set it up with Lion and restart your system booting from it. Still having problems? If not you have background app on your original disk that is the cause.

Check your system for background apps like antivirus, AntiSpam, Peer to Peer or application pre-loaders (MS has a few). Make sure you've upgraded all of your primary apps and removed any that you won't be using any longer.

Using Activity Monitor you can monitor whats running click on %CPU column to see whats the killer. WARNING: Quitting a process can make your system unstable so make sure you don't have any file open that you can't replace. Comparing a clean install Vs your running system can help you in isolating the normally running Apple OS processes as ones not to touch.

Also check network activity in case your system got zombie'd by some malware that for some reason kicked in after you installed Lion (nothing should be going across the net)

The fact your system won't sleep or wake is related to something running wild.

Good catch! forgot about queued print jobs. Your mac will try to access the printer to print, but, that shouldn't a big CPU hog causing the heat build up. If that solved the sleep issue I've learned something new here.

a second external HD drive (Firewire or USB connected) is what you need not a second partition on the internal HD. If anything use it to backup your files. In this case we want a clean OS to boot from to isolate out a problem. I often defrag my hard drive so having a bootable external makes HD maintenance a breeze. I'll take a look at your file and get back to you.

Hi Dan!

I'm happy I taught you something too :)

I still can't reinstall Lion, because my external drive is smaller than the stuff I have on my Mac

Looked over your data nothing burning the CPU. You do have some odd stuff running, but for now you need to get a fresh OS on an external drive. Do you have Leopard or Snow Leopard DC/DVD install disks? give that a try on your external HD. You may need to go out a buy a new external disk to get past this. - Good Luck
