iPhone speaker wont play iPod audio, but will sound off ringtones.

I recently got my iPhone pretty wet. I let it dry out, and it started working again. Now, it won't play audio from my music files aloud. It will however play audio through ear buds. Also, every time I get a text or before I unlock the phone, I get a message that normally comes in about "this accessory is not meant to be used with this generation of iPhone". I used to get that same message every time I plugged the iPhone into my Alpine car stereo receiver to play music through my deck. Any suggestions?

Also, I have no volume bar when I'm playing a song anymore—unless I have the ear buds plugged in.

Unfortunately, Apple doesn't cover water damage. My suggestion would be to open the device and give it a thorough cleaning with isopropyl alcohol and check for any physically damaged components. Then you can replace any needed parts here.

I had this issue aswell - OMG it's been driving me crazy! My phone would ring and play music in the car, but no other sound, no text tone, no you tube sound no music without speakers. I tried the tip below regarding cleaning the bottom speakers - AND IT WORKED!! woo hoo it's surprising how clogged it gets just from being in your pocket! As suggested, get a toothbrush and something fine and sharp, scrape the crap then brush away :-) I hope this works for you too!! xx

I dont know how helpful this is but my iPod touch 3rd gen does that it thinks the headphones are still plugged in and with it being jailbroken very inconvenient try rebooting it..

if that doesnt work send it to apple it is a hardware defect

go to SETTINGS and then enter MUSIC and go to sound restrictions maybe your sound is restricted all the way down on mute.

If you have a warranty send it to apple if it does not help.

It looks like a software issue, try restoring it.

I also have this problem with my iPhone 4s (6 months old). For some reason my phone has suddenly stopped playing music or any sound other than ringtones through the speakers OR headphones plugged in, however if I receive a call it does ring and likewise if I am choosing a ringtone in my settings, it also rings outloud.

However play any of my music or watch videos on YouTube or online and it is completely mute whilst the song or video can clearly be seen ticking along.

I am unable to increase (or decrease) the sound bar using the side control buttons.

I have checked sound limits in settings as One person suggests above however I had no restrictions on it so it's not that. I don't think I've got my phone wet in the last few days but it has been raining a lot so maybe a tiny bit of atmospheric moisture has entered it?

It is strange though that it will play ringtones perfectly well- crystal clear as ever but no music. Frustrated. Any further advice before I send it off would be very much appreciated. Cheers g

The likely answer is that the microphones, or the whole dock connector, is damaged. The ear buds can play audio because they run on a different audio output system than the regular audio output. This means that the built-in microphone for use without ear buds is separate than the audio output system designated for use with headphones. It is most definitely built-in microphone damage. However, if it does play some variants of audio, the problem might be involved with the software. Try restoring your phone through iTunes. If software fixes do not work, it is probably a hardware problem. You could buy a new dock connector from iFixIt, and install it into you iPhone. Hope this helps!

Hi folks. My issue has been resolved after no real help from apple or vodafone, I tried restoring it through iTunes and then synced it with my back up through iTunes. After a couple of times doing this it starting functioning normally again altho weirdly not straight away but a few hours after I restored it. Think there is just a gremlin in these new and cheaply manufactured (in china) iPhone models. Not very robust and I'm not very impressed but at least this now works. Good luck!

I also have the problem. Will ring, but no music, my GPS lady doesn't talk and any of the alerts aren't working either. I talked to Apple and they said it's a software issue, however I did not pay for the support so I am screwed. I will have to pay $160 for them to fix it!! Sound's like their problem.

I had faced this problem after my iphone 4s was water damaged. I opened it up and cleant the dock with alcohol( Please use a better chemical to clean) It worked for few hours and then again got docked( No sound on ipod etc ) I again opened it up and cleant it and let it dry for some time and now its working fine no problem at all. There is also a chance of the dock connector not functioning. You can easily replace it if possible and your problem will be solved

Exactly the same thing, Music would play with various headphones, but not through the main speakers.

Ringtones, Alerts etc were unaffected.

So I got a dry toothbrush and scrubbed the speakers clean and now they work fine!

Thanks to whoever provided the answer first!

Had same problem- music playing through speakers did not work, but ringtones did work; music with headphones and bluetooth did work.

I backed up, did a restore, and restored all previous data etc.

That was it - it worked!

The blowing worked for me as well! I had taken the screws on the bottom of the phone out earlier when I dropped it in water (which you can fix but opening it and putting it in white rice) so I blew around on the inside a bit, cleaned the speakers, and then blew on the speakers and ta-da! It was fixed within a minute! Thank you!

First it is important for you to understand Clearing with alcohol will be temporary and will make Correze return parts to shorten and disable the device completely.

Therefore it is advisable to turn it off.

From what you say there are some issues that require replacement of some parts, but the most important right now is to make a proper cleaning to the motherboard to prevent recurrence of corrosion.

I'm recommending you read the following article you can translate it, cleaning corrosion

And in any case to send the phone to the lab that specializes in repairing this type.

I need some help, I don't want to put my iPhone in because it's 3rd hand. Not worth spending that kind of money on an iPhone 4s that's had multiple owners. I have read through the comments and none of them are working on mine. It did this when I first got it, clean out the speakers and it worked. Had done it earlier tonight, clean out the jack and speakers and was working. Have re-formatted it because the screen kept freezing and wouldn't connect to iTunes properly and now isn't working on sound again other than the call tone. Any suggestions?

I had sound with the ringer and all but no music from any iPhone app. The Bluetooth was turned on automatically and the phone had synced with some device. I turn off Bluetooth. All Good. That Bluetooth Auto-On is really annoying.

I think your iphone has had a problem due to falling in the water, the most essential thing is to dry it with a desiccant. Try downloading any one ringtone, then install and restart your phone
