Grey screen, clicking sound

Macbook pro mid 2009 stuck on grey screen with a faint "click".......click........click sound. fan spins, wont reboot.

Sounds like a failing hard drive. Try booting from a boot disc. Insert disk and boot computer while holding the C key down on your keyboard. If it will boot then it is most likely a HD issue. You can also hook up your computer to a friends and start it in target disk mode via FireWire connection and try and fetch your data that way.
