It worked then it got really hot and then nothing.

I recently replaced a battery for my 80gb Video iPod. It worked for the first 30 minutes, the menus navigated perfectly and music was playing as expected. Then the unit became warm and then hot to the touch a few minutes later the screen went off and now it does not work.

Holding the middle button for 30 plus seconds does not work. I opened the case to see if any of the ribbons became loose, nothing all are connected firmly.

Is it the battery? That's the only thing I can suggest that is wrong with it.

It sounds like something fried. There is no discoloration on the logic board? Can you test the voltage of the battery?

I would start by replacing the battery once more, and take a close look at the battery connector.

avid2go, the first thing I would do is to remove the battery. do not reuse it. Check your dock connector for obviously bend, broken or corroded pins. Replace the battery once more, and take a close look at the battery connector. remove the front of your ipod and on the top side, opposite the battery connector, you will find an IC. That is the LTC4066. It is the USB power manager and Li-Ion battery charger. The LTC4066 also monitors the battery charge state and temperature. When the battery is charged, it quits supplying power to the battery. Make sure that it is not destroyed. Check for obvious external damage. you can download the datasheet from here. Once you are satisfied that the IC's are okay, replace the battery and see what you get. Let us know what works and what doesn't so we can continue to assist you. Attached image is from here and I just verified this on my own Classic logic board. Hope this helps good luck.
