I had to take the gum ball machine toy apart to clean it thoroughly and the coil spring fell out that makes the lever have some resistance to it when pushing it down. Where does it go or how do you put it back in?

Yeah, I looked around and couldn't locate any information whatsoever about how to disassemble or put together one of those toys.
We'll be happy try and help; there are a lot of very smart people on this site, but you'll have to work with us.
My first suggestion is to post some pictures of what you've got; show us the disassembled toy and the spring along with the location of where you believe the spring goes. Here's a guide showing you how to add pictures to your question.

Hi - if it's not too late, I too had that problem. I took it apart trying to get it to work and the spring sprung out before I could see how it was in place. After (much patience) I was able to get it work by positioning the spring on the right side of blue lever with the "longer pin" actually going through a tini-tiny pin hole that is part of the blue lever underneath and after you thread that thru you'll need to slightly pinch the spring - all while holding everything together to close it. Hope this helps - the pin hole was key! And in the end the sound still did not work but the lever and balls do!!!
